Free The Robots on Producing + Performing with Ableton Live

27 August 2010 by DJ Mike S, No Comments

Free the Robots for Ableton from gregthedude on Vimeo.

Big up to the Dubspot blog, always pushing fresh and interesting posts.

via – dubspot.com

Check out this video of Chris Alfaro, aka Free The Robots, talking about producing and performing with Ableton Live. Alfaro grew up making beats on the MPC (producing tracks for MCs and DJing) and he now uses Akai MPD32 controller to trigger beats and sounds for his genre-defying Free The Robots project. Alfaro explains why Ableton Live feels natural, a logical step, in line with the skills and familiarity one develops using the MPC. He also talks about the ease of the workflow with Live, and how it allows you work more instinctively. The video was shot by the brilliant Greg Ponstingl.

Dafunky’s in beast mode…..

Dafunky’s in beast mode…..

Just wanted to let you peoples know where Dafunky Situation is right now and what we have lined up for the near future. There is definite movement right now on the Mixtape side of things. With Kimo C and Mike S having recently and meticulously woven together a lovely mix, it is now my job to roll out the vocals. I’m feeling lucky to be given the freedom to rinse and roll it out over a wide range of musical vibrations….as that is what we’re creating with our latest mix…a harmonious melee of vibes and feelings!
Once this has been completed it’s straight into filming our EPK (electronic press kit). EPK’s allow artists to express who they are, what their sole intentions are as performers/musicians, and what they hope to achieve with their music- as an exemplar see K’naan breath meaning into his music with his EPK at K\’naan EPK. Thus, music video director Philip Sportel will be enlisted to help us tell our story, while giving people a visual as to where all Dafunky sound is coming from. Check out Philip Sportel\’s website  to see his works with the likes of Colin Munroe and Erik Flowchild – bod mon! Our current mode right now is beast mode….time to get shit done and out to the masses..word is bon jovi right there!
Talk  soon…and remember…. keep that situation funky ya’ll…..ouch!!

New Token Multi Touch Pedestal

New Token Multi Touch Pedestal

Kimo C and I have been talking about this for a long time now. It’s only a matter of time until music production will work the same way. The future looks bright!

via engadget.com

“Think you know multitouch surfaces? Think again. We’ve just come across a video demo of the Token multitouch, erm, pedestal, which seems to have come straight from the future. A clear sheet of glass that beams out video from your computer and accepts touch inputs in return, the Token concept has been designed by a chap named Rodrigo hailing out of Chile. We know it uses a rear projector for its video, but other construction details are scarce at this point; what’s really special here, however, is the way he combines it with a Traktor Pro controller titled Emulator, turning a few intelligent finger swipes into a kickass light-and-sound show. See it on video after the break. “

Native Instruments New Controller for Traktor Scratch Pro

Native Instruments New Controller for Traktor Scratch Pro

A big ups to skratch worx www.skratchworx.com for posting the now exposed and much rumored Native Instruments controller for Traktor Scratch. The pictures of this device are absolutely beautiful. I literally just had a half hour conversation about how much this thing could cost with the infamous Donny Iceburg. After much debate it’s hard to say, it really depends if this will act solely as a controller or operate as a mixer as well. There has been confirmation that there will be an audio interface built in, what has not been confirmed is whether or not there will be line / phono ins at the back for running Turtables or CDJ’s. Admittedly, I love this controller, however, are people going to use this in addition to a mixer? Probably not. How much space do you really get to set up in most Dj booth’s? Not much, if you’ve ever had do do it.

Here’s a list of what was noted from the pictures,

*Large form factor like the Torq Xponent and Amercian Audio VMS4
*4 channels
*4 hot cues
*Transport controls below the jogs
*Sample player – looks like 4 slots per deck (or maybe 2 decks plus 2 sample banks?) with play, volume and maybe F for filter (should silence the haters at last)
*4″ Jogwheel with a big ass Traktor logo
*Some sort of status bar showing different lights – on air, samples, deck a/c and deck b/d indicators, keylock and master
*Loop controls to crunch or expand the loop with what looks like an numerical readout
*Built in track navigation and loading
*Big filter on each channel
*Lots of lights for ease of use in the dark
*I can’t make out effects controls, but seeing as this controller largely mimics the interface of Traktor, I expect these controls are across the top

If you can’t realize that you must embrace the future and change the way you Dj, it may be to late for you at this point.

Thank You for Coming Out!

Thank You for Coming Out!

“There’s so many changes…changes in my life….so many changes…. that I find… I’m turning myself into a mystery…been searchin’ for self….fulfill my legacy…” Yes, yes your right, those were the first words that came
pouring from my mouth as Dafunky Situation got nasty at The College Street Bar last Friday! The place was absolutely packed! Myself…(Dusty Dust)…Kimo C and Mike S would like to say an XL thanks and big ups to all those who came out and showed their support….. not only their support for Dafunky Situation but support for good music and a fukin’ great time on the dance floor….yeah!! I saw you shaking it out there….loved it! The good vibes were abundant…..and believe me when I say that party atmosphere was infectious…..big up yourselves for real!!

So when is the next party? Sooner than later and we will be keeping you posted on our site. We are in the process completing our second mix cd….however it’s the first that we will be releasing with all three of us
collaborating on…making it as funky and fresh as possible.

Hope to see ya’ll out at the next show….keepin’ that situation funky!

Peace out,

Dusty Dust

Mike S – Pick of the week

Mike S – Pick of the week

Fertile Ground – Take Me Higher

After a long weekend of Gigs and Networking, Dusty Dust and I were cruising in the car on the way to his place to bring a week’s worth of work to a close. We were going to meet up with Mary Jane and a bouquet of her flowers. Out of nowhere we change the channel to a Jazz station on satellite radio and BANG! The voice of an angel fell upon our ears.

This song is from the album Seasons Change (c) 2002. The group is none other then Fertile Ground. Look out for a DFS remix of this song in the near future.

Cheers,

Mike S
